Unassuming Swankiness...

Check out the newest listing in Atlanta's Mid-Mod neighborhood (and our home base), Northcrest.  An unassuming dark exterior opens up to a beautiful bright and open floorplan.  The wall of white crushed marble brick is the main attraction in the living and dining room, accented by the tongue and groove ceiling and clerestory windows.  A departure from the more common Northcrest P&H split level, this rambling ranch floorplan is quite nice, offering multiple sets of sliding glass doors across the back of the house, a larger master bedroom with master bath, a huge kitchen, and a large 2 car garage.  Plenty of swankiness in this Northcrest abode offered at an amazing price!

mid-century textiles: Marimekko

There is really nothing better to me than staring at a bunch of bolts of Marimekko fabrics, and recently on a trip to Seattle, Jeff and I did this.  We did this at a small store on First Avenue called Tuuli.  They carry a ton of Marimekko as well as other amazing Finnish-designed wares.  They had wall cubbies filled with bolts and bolts of massive print florals in every color-combo you could think of!  Gorgeous.  I didn't think to take any pictures....too busy living in the graphic-oversize-print-technicolor-moment....but it looked something like this:

Marimekko has been producing quality textiles since 1951.  The longevity of their original prints is amazing as they are still just as popular today.  CB2 carries a lot of Marimekko items, and from time to time ReproDepot (one of my favorite sources for online fabric) will have some great deals on Marimekko fabric.

We have this print in a shower curtain, which I love:

russel wright and Manitoga

When most think of Russel Wright it immediately brings to mind dinnerware.  Although Wright's background was theatre design and sculpture, we most often think of him as the king of modern dinnerware.  His "American Modern" dinnerware line was originally produced in 1939, and the design is still pretty fresh today.
(American Modern Dinnerware, circa 1939)

(Casual Line, circa 1946)

In 1942 he left New York City and bought a property in the Hudson River Valley that he named Manitoga.  Manitoga has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996.  Here are some exterior shots.  It is amazing how much it is camouflaged into the surroundings...

Here are vintage pictures taken when Wright lived there.  I can't wrap my head around the scale of the dining room compared to that tree!
The gardens are amazing...we hope to one day trade in our kudzu garden out back for a lush tiered landscape and water feature like this.

searching for...the perfect dining room lighting

Owning a mid-century modern home is like being on a 20-year restoration plan, forget that 5 year plan to get everything just perfect.  This may be due to the number of projects that my husband Jeff and I have on our list, in various stages of "done-ness", or our willingness to search ebay and craigslist relentlessly in an effort to find the perfect mid-century fit for our home at a reasonable price.  On our list of the latest things we are searching for is the perfect pendant lighting to hang over our dining room table.  One of the very first things we did when we moved here in 2008 was to change out all the lighting.  There were some travesties of the 80's that included a louvered, smokey glass pendant light in the kitchen and a quintessential brass chandy in the dining room.  We installed some "interim" lighting to make it look like home until we can find the right match.
(dining room now: current lighting, embroidered drum shade; vintage walnut dining set, Kudzu Antiques; fabric on chairs, Thomas Paul; platter, Eva Zeisel "Holiday" line.)
We love the look of the Nelson bubble lights, produced for the Herman Miller line in 1947.  We imagine them in a trio, hovering above our table.

There are also so many interesting pendant trios out there, like this one found in a google search.  This is a really amazing light, and would match our kitchen and dining rooms wonderfully, too bad it was already sold.

In the meantime the search will continue until we find that absolutely perfect and semi-budget friendly vintage fixture!
