Patio Living...

We worked hard on the basement workshop this weekend, which means we are rounding the corner to other projects!  We did lots of organization and thanks to a lucky find through our neighbor, we now have the perfect basement work bench (more on this later over on Home Sweet Split Level).  Having the workshop finally finished (2 years in the making!) means we can conquer other projects with much more ease.  We are finally focusing on finishing up the basement Rompus Room, which will feature our vast tiki collection, a new tiki bar, the Heywood Wakefield rattan set we bought a while back at Kudzu Antiques, and the WW2 bathroom.  It is so nice to have an end in sight on that project.....which means we are adding more projects.  Since fall is just around the corner, we are hoping to squeeze in a quick patio build for the next couple of weekends.  We bought an awesome vintage patio table and chairs (also at Kudzu) last summer and they are awaiting a good refinishing by me.  This will be the perfect time to get that project done.

Highland Row Basement Sale This Weekend!

Liz Lemon has good taste...

Recently, Jeff and I saw this set of mid-century wood plaques on ebay that I liked.  We watched them and then of course forgot to bid.  I was bummed, luckily they were re-listed and we won them the next time.  I knew they looked familiar and then it hit me that I had seen the larger one behind the door in Liz Lemon's office on 30Rock.  Liz has all kinds of weird stuff in her office, including a giant wooden fork and spoon.  I like it.

Great P&H Build for Sale in Northwoods!

There is a great P&H home (the builders who built most houses in Northcrest) for sale in Doraville's Northwoods neighborhood.  Jeff has talked on his blog about the Northwoods neighborhood actively trying to get listed on the National Historic Preservation Registry.  Northwoods is a great neighborhood of ranch houses, one of the biggest and best examples of that type of building in the entire state, and Jeff and I lived there for a few years when we first moved to Atlanta.  Tucked in a corner of Buford Hwy. and Shallowford Rd., Northwoods is a great tree-lined neighborhood with parks and great neighbors. We loved living there, but we yearned for a more MCM style home, of which there were just a few in Northwoods.  None of those were for sale when we started actively seeking a house, and when we found Northcrest we fell in love.  It wasn't a very far move for us, only a couple of miles actually.  I still really like Northwoods, it is a great neighborhood and you can get in a good-sized, well built home for well under $200,000.

This house was actually right down the street from where we lived, and I passed it often.  Who knew we would actually end up buying an almost identical house in Northcrest?  This house has the same roof-line as ours and an extremely similar floorplan.  This one was built in 1958, right before P&H started their Northcrest project, as ours was builit in 1959 and served as a model home for a few years for that specific floorplan (which is why we have a one-car carport and no dishwasher!). 

This house is in great shape with the skylight, brick planter wall, and hood still intact!  It is such an amazing deal at $175,000!

Vintage Vera and Marcel Breuer...

I love vintage Vera Neumann textiles, and have been collecting Vera scarves for a while now.  There is currently a resurgence of Vera prints coming out at in the likes of clothes, stationary, accessories, bedding, and table linens.  This is all thanks to the licensing deals that The Very Company, based here in Atlanta, are making.  They house all the Vera archives, including tons and tons of screens.  Vera made at least one new design a day up until the time of her death.  I adore a vintage lady screenprinter especially since I studied printmaking in college!  There is also a wonderful book coming out in September that chronicles much of Vera's work and is written by Susan Seid, who saved the archives from an uncertain future.

Vera was also friends with Marcel Breuer who designed her home, The Neumann House 1952, as well as her New York City Showroom.

V is for Valiant...

Overall, this summer has really been a crazy one for us!  Between my huge career change from installation art to modern real estate and putting on all the social events at Northcrest Swim and Tennis Club (don't miss the LUAU this Saturday, with hula dancers!) we have barely had time to think about anything else.  Things keep getting crazier and better here in Northcrest.  I swear we feel like we've lived here a decade, and it has only been 2 years.  One of our dreams was realized recently by happenstance, and it happened all right here in Northcrest...you don't have to go far when you have such awesome people living in your neighborhood!

Jeff and I have always wanted an old car and as long as I can remember I had my heart set on an International Scout....until I found out that they really didn't make an automatic and well, I just can't drive a stick shift.  I never learned how really, and I'm fairly certain I would be terrible at it.  I moved on to wanting some sort of 50's-60's something, with fins or bullet lights, but those are huge and I'm not awesome at parking big things.  Hmm...oh well, it didn't seem like buying a vintage car was going to happen for several years, so it didn't really matter.  But this changed recently when Jeff saw our neighbor Ken at the pool (coincidentally, Ken is domoREALTY's amazing home stager and all around art director...it really is a neighborhood affair!) and he was thinking of selling his 1960 Valiant.  Long story short, we now are the very proud owners of an awesome 1960 Valiant with a slant 6, four doors, push-button automatic, power brakes and steering, original red interior, and of course, dual ashtrays in the backseat!......and I can actually park it.  Thanks Ken!

Eva Zeisel...

Back in February when we went on our roadtrip with friends Brian and Kevin to the 20th Century Cincinnati show (more on the trip here) Jeff fell in love with a set of Eva Zeisel dinnerware in a Kentucky antique mall.  It was timely that we had just upgraded to iPhones the week before (and that we had Brian and Kevin around to actually show us how to use them!), so there we were....walking around the antique mall, thinking it over, researching it, wondering if we would ever have the chance to buy a nice set again.  I can always tell when Jeff really wants something, and he does have a "thing" for all mid-century dinnerware/servingware/glassware and so it wasn't long before they were wrapping them up at the cash register.  We found out that this set of dinnerware from Hallcraft in the Holiday pattern was reproduced in 1999 in conjunction with the exhibition Lost Molds and Found Dinnerware: Rediscovering Eva Zeisel's Hallcraft . The molds for this collection (Tomorrow's Classic) were thought to be lost and the production of this line ceased in the 50's.  Once we were back home in Northcrest and hanging out with some neighbors, our friend Lukas told us more about it and helped fill in some holes on the research we had done.  He also has a lovely set of Hallcraft Tomorrow's Classic in a different pattern.  Here is a portion of it, including my favorite, the serving platter.
