Patio Living...

We worked hard on the basement workshop this weekend, which means we are rounding the corner to other projects!  We did lots of organization and thanks to a lucky find through our neighbor, we now have the perfect basement work bench (more on this later over on Home Sweet Split Level).  Having the workshop finally finished (2 years in the making!) means we can conquer other projects with much more ease.  We are finally focusing on finishing up the basement Rompus Room, which will feature our vast tiki collection, a new tiki bar, the Heywood Wakefield rattan set we bought a while back at Kudzu Antiques, and the WW2 bathroom.  It is so nice to have an end in sight on that project.....which means we are adding more projects.  Since fall is just around the corner, we are hoping to squeeze in a quick patio build for the next couple of weekends.  We bought an awesome vintage patio table and chairs (also at Kudzu) last summer and they are awaiting a good refinishing by me.  This will be the perfect time to get that project done.

A trip home...

So I took a few days last week to make the drive up to North Alabama to visit my family.  Monday of course was the City Hall East sale (more on that coming!), so I headed up on Tuesday and stayed for a few days.  I had a great time looking around my grandmother's house, which was built in the 50's.  Gran's house is a super cute ranch, with beautiful original light oak floors and a den on the back of the house with walls and ceiling of knotty pine paneling.  There are tons of details in her house that are great and much of it is still original (she did get rid of the red shag carpeting some time ago that lived in the den!).  Here are some pictures I took of some of my favorite details.

Highland Row Basement Sale This Weekend!

Liz Lemon has good taste...

Recently, Jeff and I saw this set of mid-century wood plaques on ebay that I liked.  We watched them and then of course forgot to bid.  I was bummed, luckily they were re-listed and we won them the next time.  I knew they looked familiar and then it hit me that I had seen the larger one behind the door in Liz Lemon's office on 30Rock.  Liz has all kinds of weird stuff in her office, including a giant wooden fork and spoon.  I like it.

Great P&H Build for Sale in Northwoods!

There is a great P&H home (the builders who built most houses in Northcrest) for sale in Doraville's Northwoods neighborhood.  Jeff has talked on his blog about the Northwoods neighborhood actively trying to get listed on the National Historic Preservation Registry.  Northwoods is a great neighborhood of ranch houses, one of the biggest and best examples of that type of building in the entire state, and Jeff and I lived there for a few years when we first moved to Atlanta.  Tucked in a corner of Buford Hwy. and Shallowford Rd., Northwoods is a great tree-lined neighborhood with parks and great neighbors. We loved living there, but we yearned for a more MCM style home, of which there were just a few in Northwoods.  None of those were for sale when we started actively seeking a house, and when we found Northcrest we fell in love.  It wasn't a very far move for us, only a couple of miles actually.  I still really like Northwoods, it is a great neighborhood and you can get in a good-sized, well built home for well under $200,000.

This house was actually right down the street from where we lived, and I passed it often.  Who knew we would actually end up buying an almost identical house in Northcrest?  This house has the same roof-line as ours and an extremely similar floorplan.  This one was built in 1958, right before P&H started their Northcrest project, as ours was builit in 1959 and served as a model home for a few years for that specific floorplan (which is why we have a one-car carport and no dishwasher!). 

This house is in great shape with the skylight, brick planter wall, and hood still intact!  It is such an amazing deal at $175,000!

Vintage Vera and Marcel Breuer...

I love vintage Vera Neumann textiles, and have been collecting Vera scarves for a while now.  There is currently a resurgence of Vera prints coming out at in the likes of clothes, stationary, accessories, bedding, and table linens.  This is all thanks to the licensing deals that The Very Company, based here in Atlanta, are making.  They house all the Vera archives, including tons and tons of screens.  Vera made at least one new design a day up until the time of her death.  I adore a vintage lady screenprinter especially since I studied printmaking in college!  There is also a wonderful book coming out in September that chronicles much of Vera's work and is written by Susan Seid, who saved the archives from an uncertain future.

Vera was also friends with Marcel Breuer who designed her home, The Neumann House 1952, as well as her New York City Showroom.
